Ganesh

Lord Ganesh is the virtual son of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvathi. The story of creation of ganesh is a very fascinating one.

A long long time ago when Lord Shiva, was away fighting for the gods, the lady of the house, goddess Parvathi was alone at home. On one occasion, she needed someone to gaurd the house when she was going for a bath. Unable to think of an alternative, she used her powers to create a son, Ganesh. She instructed Ganesh to keep strict vigil on the entrance to the house and not to allow anyone into the house. Ganesh agreed and stayed on the strictest of strict vigils.

In the meantime Lord Shiva returned happy after a glorious victory for the gods, only to be stopped at the entrance by Ganesh. Ganesh, acting on Parvathi's orders verbatim, did not allow Shiva to enter the house. Lord Shiva was enraged beyond control and in a fit of rage slashed the head of Ganesh. In the meantime Paravti came out from her bath and was aghast at the scene. She was very very angry at her lordship for what had happened and explained him the situation.

Lord Shiva wanted to make it up to Parvathi very badly and agreed to put life back into Ganesha by putting the head of the first sleeping living creature that came in sight which was sleeping with its head to the north. He sent his soldiers to go in search of the creature. The first creature which came in sight was an elephant. So Lord Shiva re-created his son with the head of the elephant. Hence the trunk of Lord Ganesha.

Parvathi was still not totally happy with the deal and wanted more. Then Shiva granted Ganesha a boon that before beginning of any undertaking or task people would worship Lord Ganesh. Thus the reason for worship of ganesha before start of any work.

Country of origin: USA

Background notes: In the beginning of his career Mickey Mouse wasn't the straight arrow we know today. In the cartoons he would on occation do things that would be inconceivable that he would do today, like being mean to others. In the cartoon The Chain Gang from 1930 he was in prison. The cartoon was a prison comedy in the vein of Laurel and Hardy's The Second Hundred Years where Mickey was a prisoner on the run, Pegleg Pete was the jailer and Pluto was one of the dogs chasing him. Pluto was not named in the cartoon. The name would not be given until later.

Pluto made his second appearance in The Picnic from November 1930. Here he is Minnie Mouse's dog, and he is called Rover. The name Pluto did not come until The Moose Hunt from 1931. Today it is taken for granted that Pluto is Mickey's dog, but in the beginning he was just a character which was used whenever a dog was needed like the Donald Duck cartoon Put-Put Troubles from 1940. The establishment of ownership came gradually.

Country of origin: USA

Chip and Dale started out as two identical and unnamed chipmunks in the story Private Pluto, where a couple of chipmunks were using a pillbox for storing nuts and, one of the cannons for cracking the nuts, both of which Pluto was guarding. The cartoon Private Pluto from 1943 is usually considered the first appearance of Chip and Dale, and they were created for the cartoon so to some extent it is true, but Disney published an illustrated short story version of the cartoon to come in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #25 from October 1942, which must be considered the real first appearance. No credit for the creation of Chip and Dale is available, but Walt Disney is credited as the producer, Clyde Geromini as the director and John Lounsbery as the animator and the three must be assumed to be the major contributors in the creation.

It wasn't until the third appearance, Chip an' Dale from 1947, that the two chipmunks got their names. The names Chip and Dale were allegedly a pun on the name Chippendale, referring to the furniture designer Thomas Chippendale. It was also at this point they started showing differences in personality. Chip was the logical schemer and Dale the dumb schemer. The difference in looks with Chip looking as he used to and Dale getting the pink nose, gapped front teeth and an extra tuft of hair came in the cartoon Three for Breakfast from 1948.

From 1943 to 1956, Chip and Dale appeared in 23 cartoons, of which Chip an' Dale (1947) and Toy Tinkers (1949) were nominated for an Oscar®. After the last cartoon in 1956, the chipmunks weren't seen in cartoons again until Disney released a couple of specials in 1986, and the series Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers started in 1989. In Rescue Rangers, Chip and Dale formed a detective agency and helped the less fortunate. In the series, Chip was dressed like Indiana Jones and played the strong leader. Dale was dressed in a Hawaiian shirt like Thomas Magnum from Magnum P.I. and was the laid back irresponsible prankster. The series lasted 3 seasons and a total of 65 episodes. After the Rescue Rangers, Chip and Dale started appearing on the anthology series Mickey Mouse Works (1999-200), House of Mouse (2001-2003), and the current Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (2006-).

Tweeties

Tweety Bird (also known as Tweety Pie or simply Tweety) is a two-time Academy Award-winning fictional character in the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of animated cartoons. Tweety's popularity, like that of The Tasmanian Devil, actually grew in the years following the dissolution of the Looney Tunes cartoons.[citation needed] The name "Tweety" is a play on words, as it originally meant "Sweetie", along with "tweet" being a typical English onomatopoeia for the sounds of birds.

Despite the widespread speculation that Tweety was female, he is and has always been a male character, something that he often has confirmed in The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries. On the other hand, his species is ambiguous; although originally and often portrayed as a young canary, he is also frequently called a rare and valuable "Tweetybird" as a plot device, and once called "The only living specimen". Also, the title song , suggests that it is a Canary. His shape more closely suggests that of a baby bird, which in fact is what he was during his early appearances. The yellow feathers were added but otherwise he retained the baby-bird shape.

Tweety is, for the most part, a good-natured character happily spending life in his cage or a nest. However, when a cat or other adversary threatens him, he can become downright malicious and devious, even kicking his enemy when he's down. In many of Tweety's appearances the bird is shown accompanying his owner, Granny.

Tom & Jerry

Tom and Jerry is a successful and long-running series of theatrical short subjects created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer that centered on a never-ending rivalry between a housecat (Tom) and a brown mouse (Jerry) whose chases and battles often involved comic violence. Hanna and Barbera ultimately wrote and directed one hundred and fourteen Tom and Jerry cartoons at the MGM cartoon studio in Hollywood, California between 1940 and 1957, when the animation unit was closed down. The original series is notable for having won the Academy Awards for Best Short Subject (Cartoons) seven times, tying it with Walt Disney's Silly Symphonies as the most-awarded theatrical animated series.

Donald Duck

Donald Duck is a cartoon character from Walt Disney Productions. Donald is a white anthropomorphic duck with a yellow-orange bill, legs, and feet. He usually wears a sailor shirt, cap, and a red or black bowtie, but no pants (except when he goes swimming). Donald's most famous trait is his easily provoked and occasionally explosive temper.[citation needed]

According to the Disney canon, particularly in the 1942 short Donald Gets Drafted, Donald's full name is Donald Fauntleroy Duck. Donald's birthday is officially recognized as June 9, 1934[2], the day his debut film, The Wise Little Hen, was released. However, in The Three Caballeros (1944), his birthday is given as simply "Friday the 13th", which is in reference to the bad luck he experiences in almost all his cartoon appearances. Donald's Happy Birthday (short) gives his birthday as 13 March.

Mickey and Minnie

Mickey Mouse is a comic animal cartoon character who has become an icon for The Walt Disney Company. Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks[1] and voiced by Walt Disney. The Walt Disney Company celebrates his birth as November 18, 1928 upon the release of Steamboat Willie.[2] The anthropomorphic mouse has evolved from being simply a character in animated cartoons and comic strips to become one of the most recognizable symbols in the world.

Minnie Mouse is an animated cartoon of the Mickey Mouse universe featured in animated cartoons, comic strips and comic book by The Walt Disney Company. The comic strip story "The Gleam" (published January 19-May 2, 1942) by Merrill De Maris and Floyd Gottfredson first gave her full name as Minerva Mouse. Minerva has since been a recurring alias for her.

The comic strip story "Mr. Slicker and the Egg Robbers" (published September 22–December 26, 1930) introduced her father Marcus Mouse and her unnamed mother, both farmers. The same story featured photographs of her grandparents Marshall Mouse and Matilda Mouse. Her best known relatives however remains her uncle Mortimer Mouse and her twin nieces, Millie and Melody, though most often a single niece, Melody, appears. In many appearances, Minnie is presented as a close friend of Daisy Duck[1], Donald Duck's girlfriend and occasionally a friend to Clarabelle Cow. Minnie's sister Mandie Mouse was a recurring character early on.
